172 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1676-1678.
Lib R. R. with amunition & if their case require itt, with men also And
order the letter be directed to be left with the Chancelor (for
my selfe & the Councell to consider thereon what further
necessary to be done) where I shall cause the post daily to
attend to bring me advice from thence. I have written Col.
Coleborne Walker & Stevens to this effect, & that they stand
upon their guard untill they heare further from myselfe & the
Councell. For my part I am of opinion that Pocatap is the
murtherer or the cause thereof & that no Susquahannoh is
there, but that Pocatap & his Accomplices are the authors
thereof, but I hope its not a genll defeccon of all the Indians,
but only Pocataps party, which if so, we shall then be able to
deale with him & his. I shall not write Col Calvert therefore
doe hereby order him to cause his Capt Lieut to draw his men
together & see their armes fixt, & to be att an houres warn-
p. 143 ing, upon paine of death. And that he order Capt Cammell
to doe the like, And I shall order his Major & Capt Gerrard
to doe the same And I hereby order Col Brooke to cause his
Officers of his regiment to doe the like And I shall send
orders to Col Douglas to the same effect; for I thinke itt
very convenient to be in a readines, & that we have men fixt
if occasion require If you think any thing more att prsent
(before we gett further intelligence from Somrsett County) to
be done ordered or advised, lett me heare from you p the St
Maryes post whom I sent downe to the Chancelor this morn-
ing. Lett the person entrusted to be sent to Somrsett
County for intelligence be instructed to make a speedy
returne, if there be any great danger. I shall not trouble you
more att prsent, but leave you to consider & advise upon the
prmisses, & expect yor Answers hereunto p the St Maryes
post I am

I desire the Provinciall Court may not upon this intelli-
gence be adjourned, but that as much busines as possibly can
be done may be dispatched And if upon the next intelligence
from Somrsett County you finde any urgent occasion for my
prsence with you, I shall upon the receipt thereof wait on you.

I hope we shall heare further from Somrsett County before
the Court end And then we shall have a full Councell to
debate matters if occasion require. After you have perused
the inclosed Comission to Col Coleborne. I desire you to
