438 Correspondence of Governor Sharpe.

Worship and Religion of Christ, within the said Region
Islands Islets and Limits aforesaid hereafter shall
happen To be built, with Licence and Faculty of erect-
ing and founding Churches Chapels and Places of
Worship in Convenient and Suitable Places Within
the Premises, and of causing the same to be dedicated
and Consecrated according to the Ecclesiastical Laws
of the Kingdom of England with all and singular such
and as ample Rights, Jurisdiction Privileges Preroga-
tives Royalties Liberties Immunities And Royal Rights
and temporal Franchises whatsoever as well by Sea as
by Land, within the Region Islands Ilets and Limits
aforesaid To be had exercised used and enjoyed as
any Bishop of Durham within the Bishoprick or County

Palatine of Durham in our Kingdom of England ever

heretofore hath had, held, used or enjoyed or of Right
Could or ought to have, hold use or enjoy."
The Churches or Chappels and Places of Worship within the
Premises are hereby directed to be dedicated and Consecrated
according to the Ecclesiastical Laws of the Kingdom of Eng-
land. And in as much as it is held, that there is but one
Canon Law per totam Ecclesiam and that the Law of the
Church of England is as well General, as National Extensible
over all Subordinate Countries and Dominions where that
Church is established, the Church of Maryland must necessa-
rily be Subject to and Bound by the same Laws, which are
moreover declared to be in full force in direct and positive
Terms by the Act of 1696. C. 17. S. 7 wherein Authority
being Given to the Visitors to make Laws Orders and Rules
for the good Government of Free Schools, It is provided not-
withstanding that the said Rules Laws and orders be no ways
contrary to your Majesty's Prerogative Royal, nor to the Laws
& Statutes of your Majestys Kingdom of England or Prov-
ince of Maryland aforesaid, or to the Canons or Constitutions
of The Church of England by Laws established, and the same
Provision Is made in 1723. C. 19. S. 6. Shall the Laws and
Statutes of the Kingdom of England, and the Canons and
Constitutions of the Church of England by Law established
bind the Visitors of Free Schools and not extend over the
Church in Maryland ? How glaring an Absurdity.
The Patron Paramount of the said Church is Lord Balti-
more, in whom is vested not only in Quality of Absolute Lord
and Proprietary all Powers lodged in the Hands of the Kings
of England, to whom with respect to this Government he is
consider'd as Successor with Regard to the Supreme Direc-
tion of all affairs as well Ecclesiastical as Temporal, but Like-
wise Episcopal Powers are expressly given him, so far as Can
