able but he may endeavour to make a Landing some where
or other upon the Eastern Shore, and should that be the case,
we have no doubt but upon the receipt of this that you will be
in readiness as soon as may be with the Militia under your
Command to repel every attempt that he may make to land
within your District.
Should the militia in your District be in want of Powder
you'll be pleased to apply to Brigadier Chamberlain for as
much as may be necessary for your immediate purpose.

[Jordan to Council.]

St. Mary's County July 15th 1776.
Gentlemen :
This [is] to inform you that there is now lying, off the
mouth of St Mary's River, between seventy and eighty sail of
vessels. I am now at Leonard Town on my way down with
part of the 6th Battalion under my command, where I received
an Express from Colo Barnes (who is now at St. Inegoe's
Neck with the lower Battalion) informing me that this morn-
ing Ten Boats full of men landed on St. Georges Island and
had returned for more. I expect to be opposite the Island
some time this night and shall endeavour to get the best intel-
ligence I can of their numbers, and give the earliest notice.
We shall want more powder and lead and also flints, if they
are to be had. Major Eden by whom this goes will inform
you more fully. The Committee for this County sat this day
and have detained Capt. Forrest's Company until they hear
from you. I am Gentlemen: Your mo: obedt Servt
Jeremiah Jordan.

Inclosed are Capt. Forrests & Lieut Bond's enrollments, the
other two officers have completed theirs, but have not returned
them to Capt Forrest Capt Forrest desires me to inform you
that his enrollment was compleated the day before they were
received by the Field officer.

Sir.
My son tells me, that Capt Nathn Smith informs him that
there is a vacancy in his Company of a third Lieuty and as he
had not an oportunity of being Preferd in Colo Smallwood's
Battalion I should be very happy in getting him with Capt
Smith or Capt Fulford. Major Price, if in Town, can inform
your Honours of his behaviour while under him. If these
