of the Council of Safety, 1776. 461

of the Council, and I could wish it were still in my power,
without making too great a sacrafice, to remain of that Body,
as the fullness of my gratitude wou'd perhaps, be better
manifested by a continuation in that department, than any
profession I can make; but as that cannot be effected unless
under such circumstances as scarcely leave it optional to act
or not, and in my opinion will justify a temporary retirement
with one who has been so long and constantly engaged in
the service of the Public as I have, I am obliged, however
reluctantly, to decline a further continuance and to request
you to accept this as my resignation. When I was last in
company with the President of the convention I desired he
wou'd do me the favor to signify to them the impractica-
bility of my remaining longer at your Board, and to request
for me, that I might not be in the nomination, but I presume
as I am in, it escaped his memory from the hurry of Business
and was not intimated to them. I am persuaded if it had
been they woud have dispensed with my acting any longer in
that Station,, and chearfully indulged me with the recess,
which I am now constrained to take.
I have the Honor to be most respectfully,
Gentlemen,
Yr obedt Hble Servt
Ja. Tilghman
