C.S.C.

C. S. J,

take passage in this vessell for Philadelphia you'l endeavor to
take up said obligation which otherwise we may find difficult
to discharge here when demanded. The terms with him rely
on you to make but think you had better give currency for
currency in Speicie together with Interest accrueing, than suffer
a demand of the money here, should you take up the above
mentioned obligations, which will be rendering the State of
Maryland a singular service please to advise us thereof by
first opportunity We are with Esteme
Gentlemen, your most obedt Servts

Betsey, Capt May.

[Dent and Parnham to Council.

Annapolis Novr 8th 1776.
Gentlemen.
Mr Hugh Gardner of Charles County being desirous of
serving the American States in the Military wars, we beg
leave to recommend him to your Honble Board, from a thorough
knowledge of Mr Gardner, his strong attachment to the
interest of his Country, the Zeal he has always shown in the
common cause, his indefatigable assiduity and application to
and knowledge of Military affairs. We can assure that his
merit wou'd well entitle him to the command of a Company or
Indeed to a higher commission, but as he is sensible that
there are men of merit who have been some time in the
service and who ought to be preferred, all that he at present
aspires to is Lieutenancy, and I believe he would be glad of
being in the Mattross Service; We wou'd Therefore propose
him as first Lieutenant in the Company of Mattrosses now
raising for this Town, to the command of which company from
the good opinion we entertain of his abilities, we hope Mr Wm
Campbell may be preferred, We are gentlemen
Most Respectfully yours &c.
Jno Dent
J. Parnham.

Saturday November 9th 1776
