this I much doubt being at present much indisposed. The
two adverse armies remain in Statu quo. Genl Mifflin who is
in town says our army is getting into better order and he
hopes will be able to sustain any attack the enemy may make.
Doctr Brown arrived here the day after my letter to him was
sent but has been very ill ever since. Surgeons are much
wanted in Camp but where proper ones will be procured I
know not. I am with great esteem, Gent,
Your most obedt Servt

[Hughes to Tilghman.]
Charles Town Cecil County Octor 1st 1776.
Sir. Agreable to your letter of the 8th ult and the resolves
of the 10th I called the Battalion together, to raise a company
of volunteers and in a few days after made up one composed
of as hearty young fellows as any company that has marched
out of this province, who have readily and willingly agreed to
march under the following officers, viz, James Maxwell, Capt
John Hartshorn 1st Lieutenant, William Johnston 2nd Lieutenant
and Adam Glascow Ensign.
I wrote to the Council of Safety (in your recess) recom-
mending the above gentlemen to be commissioned by them
and acknowledging the receipt of £333 .. 5 cash, for the use
of the Company and at the same time begging they would
forward the Cartouch boxes, Havre Sacks, Canteens and
what other necessaries they had there for the troops, and to
send up as much more cash as they thot would be necessary
for the purchase of blanketts and provisions for the immedi-
ate use of the Compa and to pay the remainder of the bounty,
and advance agreable to your resolves, but not receiving any
advices from them have advised Mr Hartshorn to wait on you
and receive your further instructions. Mr Hartshorn can
inform you what situation they are in at present with respect
to arms.
Bayonetts cannot be got here at any rate, and should be glad
you would instruct him in what manner these and all other
necessaries that are wanting may be procured.
I am Gen'
Yr most obedt & Hble Servt
Tho: Hughes.
