[Brooke to M. Tilghman.]
Lower District Frederick County 15th Aug. 1776.
Sir. Finding my Enemies have been so far successfull in
poisoning the minds of the 29th Battalion of Militia, that a
majority are against my acting as Major, I therefore take the
liberty of inclosing you my commission. I wou'd not have it
understood by this Resignation, that I have deserted the
common Cause; no Sir, I will most cheerfully when necessary,
hazard my life & fortune, in defence of the Rights and
Liberties of America. Impressed with the deepest concern &
warm'd with resentment of the measures pursued by a
venal and corrupt Parliament, I stept forth with the foremost
of my countrymen in opposition to the Tyrannical encroach-
ments of Great Britain. Appealing to that Divine Being who
searches the heart, I can safely declare I have been actuated
by no other motive than the publick good & I flatter myself
that every impartial person who takes a retrospective view of
my conduct will find it uniform. If I have erred, it has been
the fault of my head & not of my heart. With the most
ardent wishes for the happiness and prosperity of the United
States of America.
I am, Sir. Your Most obedt Hble Servant.
Richd Brooke
