party of Majr Fallen's men and sent by the Major to us as by
his letter which we have inclosed for your perusal will appear.
The depositions of Joseph Mariman and Moses Yell which
are mention'd in the inclosed letter we have since received
from Capt Eccleston the Magistrate who took them, which
we have also inclosed. We have not seen Capt Eccleston
since he took the Depositions but are informed Mariman
and Yell have returned home on a promise that they wou'd
attend your board on notice. We apprehend the Prisoners
will not deny their being in service of Dunmore, but if they
should and any further evidence should be necessary to prove
that fact on your informing us of it we believe such may easily
be had. Wheeland is the man who the last convention (as we
are told) were informed served as Pilot to Dunmore's vessels
up to Nanticoke point and he confesses to us he was with the
party who took cattle from Hopkins Island. We are Gentn
Your obedt Servants

P. S. We have just now received some powder from
Talbot which appears to us entirely unfit for our use. We
being much in want of ammunition have sent a sample of the
powder to you hoping that on seeing it you will take some
order about it that we may be furnished. We only got 178lb
Lead.

[Mariman' s Deposition.]

July 27th 1776
Joseph Mariman being sworn on the Holy Evangels of
Almighty God deposeth and sayeth that about the 15th day of
this Instant he with Moses Yell left the mouth of Hungar
River in a Vessel bound to Potomac loaded with Plank and
Tar, but being a hard gale and a large swell they were obliged
to put back, but on their attempting to put back the tide
headed them, they afterwards hove about and stood for the
mouth of Potomack again, and about day break they espied
Lord Dunmore's fleet at the distance of about a mile, they
then hove about and stood for Smyth' s Islands and there came
to an anchor they stayed there about two or three hours, the
wind moderated, this Deponent went ashore to Smyths Island
in order to buy some fish and to seek for a Canoe he had lost
the night before, and to enquire if there was no inlet there to
make a better Harbour, and to get some fire to cook with.
Before he got ashore he saw two men in a Canoe making
towards him, which he understood afterwards was Joseph
Wheeland Junr and one Lazarus, a Mulatto, and by the time
