ward, and we must, in my opinion, avail ourselves of the
skill of such as we can meet with among ourselves, tho' their
knowledge be not so perfect or complete. I was yesterday at
Whetstone and find Capt Smith has five Eighteen Pounders
to spare, four of them on High Carriages and the other on a
Low Carriage. I think the sooner you get them down to
Annaps the better. I intended down about the middle of
next week but have had a touch of the fever and ague which
I believe will keep me up here a little longer.
I am very Respectfully
Gent. yr most obedient, Humble Servt

Calvert County July 27th 1776.
Gentlemen :
I received orders from Collo Mackall (who is now at St
Georges) yesterday, to send a company of our Militia to S.
Mary's to relieve the Company now stationed there, which I
shall do without loss of time. As Captn John Brooke his
first Lieutenant & Ensign have enrolled the number of men
directed by Convention to intitle them to their commissions,
I would humbly beg leave to ask if it would not contribute
greatly to the Ease of our Militia if they were ordered to be
stationed either at Drum Point or down in S[ Marys in lieu of
the Companys of malitia now at them places untill such time
as your Honours may think proper to order them otherwise.
I am Gent Your Mo: obdt Servt
Alx. Somerville

Gentlemen.
The Bearer Capt. John Oglevie finding Capt. Alexander
had not made up his compliment of men by the 20th
Instant, and being zealous in the cause, proposed to march
with his Company or with such a part of them as could with
conveniency leave their homes; upon which in a few days time
he had the number inroled agreable to his Return, hope they
will be Excepted as they are a parcel of active, stout, willing
men. We are Gentyr mo: obdt Hble: Servt
