expect will be equal in sight with what he can see in Phila. I
will send him immediately of these on his return and get him
instructed all I can, it will be some expense if more than my
commission which I will willingly spend that way hope to be
reimburst in my accounts, the Council of Safety may be
assured its my earnest desire to promote the business all I can
and will from time to time advise of my success.

[Stevenson to Council.]
Dr Stevenson begs leave to present a memorial to the hon-
ourable the Council of Safety now setting, to acquaint them,
that some time ago he had engaged a quantity of Gunpowder
from Mr John Craig Mercht wh the Committee of Balto Town
took for the public service, and being at present greatly dis-
tressed for a small supply of powder to carry on his copper
works, requests that he may be supplied with such a quantity
as they shall think proper, and he will with pleasure repay any
charge in replacing the same.

[Beatty to Council.]
Frederick Town March 2d 1776.
Gent Inclosed you have the petition of one of the compa-
nies in the 33d Battalion praying that you will commission the
Gentlemen therein mentioned. The Company seems to be
well satisfied to be commanded by them and I am of opinion
they will make good officers therefore hope you will approve
of them. Captain Mantz who was appointed quartermaster
of our troops by the last convention has declining serving in
that capacity, therefore I hope you will have the Commissions
for him and the other officers of his company made out and
sent up with the others, by the first safe hand and you will
oblige :

N. B. Mr Lewis Rush who was appointed quarter master
to the 33d Battalion has accepted of a Commisn in the Pensyla
troops therefore has declined serving as quarter master in said
