expeditiously as they can.
22 Feby. 1776

[Mackall and others to Council.]

Calvert County Feby 20th 1776.
Gents. We have received yours of the 2d Instant inclosing
a resolve of Congress and an order by the Council of Safety
appointing us to collect all the gold & silver in this county.
We have received and engaged £700 Currency, and expect
in the course of another week to procure about two or three
hundred pounds more. Much more might have been col-
lected, had the paper Currency been sent down to give in
exchange. We hope you will inform us when you would
have the gold and silver brought to Annapolis. Continental
money is asked in exchange for most of the Cash we have
collected or engaged.
We are Genl your most hble Serts Benj: Mackall 4th
Alex. Somervell Pat. S. Smith.

Gentlemen. I am requested by Capt Beall lo apply to the
Council of Safety for one hundred pounds for the use of his
Company.

Frederick Town 20th Feby 1776.
Sir. I Recd yours of the 15th Ins by which it appears that I
was appointed Quarter Master of the Battalion of Troops to
be raised in this province, and desire to know of my except-
ance, but being apprehensive that I had not as much influence
in the house as to be a commitioned officer, I am willing to
give up the quarter mastership to some one that may be more
suitable than me, and will rest at my displeasure.
