Philadelphia, or if that cannot be done then so much as you
can agree for, and request you would make the Contract for
the Use of the Province. They have sent by Capt. Craigg
£500 currency to pay for the Ton already engaged, but do not
intend the whole Ton for the separate Use of your County :
they will take care you shall be plentifully supplied in propor-
tion to other Counties. You will purchase upon the most
reasonable Terms. The Price we expect will not exceed £25
currency pr ct unless the Committee of Philadelphia should
give more: The Balance of Cash shall be immediately paid
to your Order as soon as the Powder is landed or put into our
Custody or Power

[Smallwood to Jenifer.]

Woodyard 14th Feby 1776
Dr Sir. In my way down called on Mr West & viewed his
Gun Locks, some of which are tolerable good, but not equal to
the English Musket locks those at 7/6 are good at the price,
& might answer the militia; at this critical time I think it
wou'd be well to engage the whole, as they are a very scarce
article. Knives will be much wanting in the pur-
chased out of their pay or allowed by council &c he has 231
cutters wh youll judge of the expediency of taking

Thursday 15 Feb. 1776.

Council met. Present the same Members as yesterday
except Mr Hall.

Commissions issued to Abraham Simmons appointed Capt
Thomas Tongue 1 Lieutenant, Thomas Morton 2d Lieutenant
and Abell Hill Ensign of a Company of Militia in Ann Arundel
County belonging to the South River Battalion.
Adjourned till 3 o'Clock & met according to Adjournment.
Ordered That the Treasurer of the Western Shore pay to
Messrs Samuel and Robert Purviance five hundred & thirty
five pounds eight Shillings for Canvas for the use of the Forces
of this Province, as pr Account.
Mr Robert Purviance engages with the Council of Safety to
return to them the 424 yards of Canvas delivered to Mr Lux,
