resolutions to go with Coll Jowles Mr Richard Smith and
others to the head of the river and to other places for further
satisfacon and also are pleased with the care you have taken
to Recall and put a stop to the Letter sent to call over the
Virginians which if it had taken effect might have occassioned
the Ruine and plunder of many the good people and Inhabit-
ants of this province whose safety and Interests it shall be
alwayes our Endeavours to preserve As to the severall noto-
rious and apparently false Rumours diffused and spread
among the people the designe whereof is obvious to all men
of sense that the same were designedly given out as the
Council have already remarked to affright and confuse and
then to pillage and plunder the people Especially such as had
anything to loose and wee have greate reason to beleive that
the designe of the Virginians to come over was purely for
love of the plunder their pretensions to the contrary notwith-
standing which mischeife wee doubt not but youl endeavour to
prevent together with the assistance of Coll Jowles and the
rest of the good people adjacent to those parts to whome wee
heartily desire to be remembred leaving the prudent ordering
and setling of matters there to yor wisdome wee conclude
with our hearty service from the Council at Mattapany the
26th day of March 1689 at three in the afternoone

The Enclosed papers yesterday came to our hands by an
Expresse from Stafford County with Letters from Gentlemen
principally concerned in the management of the affaires of the
said County representing the feares the Inhabitants thereof
are in from Intelligences they say have received from Indians
belonging to your Governmt of Maryland which feares are
encreased by the great number of Indians flocking from Mary-
land haveing for some time with some threats forced the
liberty of hunting in Stafford County and finding the Inform-
acon have principall relacon to some worthy Gentlemen of
your province of Maryland Wee thought it our part to signify
the same unto you and to request what you with the Council
of the Province of Maryland will please soe farr to contribute
to the peace and quiet of this his Maties Government of Vir-
ginia as forthwith to order the Indians of your province of
Maryland now ranging in Stafford County to repaire to their
respective Indian Townes and also please to command them
not to pass over to the west and south side of potomack River
and this request wee make to satisfy the present feares and
