laid before the Lords Commissioners of their Majesty's
Treasury with the desire of the Committee to receive as soon
as may be the opinion of the Lords Commissioners of the
Treasury upon the whole matter
I am &c:

May it please your Lordships
In obedience to your Lordsps Order signified to me by Mr
Guy the 21st of this month that I should report the matter of
Fact relating to the Petition of the Assembly of Maryland
concerning the Impost Money of twenty five ships that came
from that Province without paying the duties there in the year
1690. I humbly represent to your Lordships that by an Act
past in the Assembly of Maryland the 30th of Aprill 1619 an
Impost of two shillings for every hogshead of Tobacco ex-
ported from thence is granted to the Lord Proprietor of Mary-
land whereof one moyety is appropriated by the said act for
the use and support of the Government there that upon taking
that Province under the immediate care and attention of the
Crown her Majesty in Councill on the twenty sixth of Febru-
ary 1690. was pleased to order that according to the said Act
one moyety of the said impost of two shillings p hogshead
should be applyed to the use of the Government of Maryland
and that the other moyety should be received by the Lord
Baltemore to his own use as Proprietary of that Province.
And Col: Copley being directed by her Majesty's Instructions
bearing date the 26th of August 1691. to take care that one
fourth part of the said moyety be applied towards the main-
taining a constant Magazine with Arms and ammunition for
the defence of the Country And to receive the remaining
three fourths parts to his own use as Governor in Chief of
that Province for his support of the Government there The
sume of nine hundred and forty pounds of the moyety of the
said Impost for the year 1692. appears by the said Petition to
have been disposed of by the Conventn of Maryland for the
Publicque uses of the Government before the arriviall of
Collonl Copley Whereupon the Assembly humbly pray that in
lieu thereof so far as it will answer the same Col: Copley may
have directions to receive to his own use the whole moyety of
the said Impost of two shillings p hogshead from the twenty
five ships which came from Maryland in the year 1690 without
paying the duties there But the Receiver Generall of Customs
being directed by your Lordships order of the 2d of Oct. 1691
to demand from the Masters of twenty ships which came from
Maryland in the year 1690 without paying the duties there the
sum of seaventeen hundred and thirty pounds nineteen shil-
lings which appeared to be due for the duties of their ships
