Robert Mason Justices of the said Court
Major James Smalwood of Charles County a near Neigh-
bour unto and well acquainted with most or all of the Indians
in the said County is called in, and hath intimated unto him
that his Excy pursuant to his Majestys Instructions and
according to former Articles with sd Indians is desirous to
have some Conference with them, in Order to the renewing
ratifying and confirming their antient League and Peace with
the English, to which End and Purpose the said Major Smal-
wood is desired and hereby required to acquaint the Great
Men of the several Nations of the said Jndians with his Excys
Arrival here, and that they will give him a Meeting at St
Marys on the tenth Day of May next the time appointed for
convening the General Assembly of this Province; and that
the said Major Smalwood for the better Dispatch and Expedi-
tion in the Premises be authorised and empowered by War-
rant from this Board to press Horse or horses, as Occasion
shall require

To the Kings most Excellent Majesty
The humble Petition of Nicholas Sewall
Sheweth
That Your Petitioner some time in October 1689 after the
Turn of Government in Maryland, being with several Persons
of that Province forced by the violent Proceedings of some
Persons there to fly for their Security to the Colony of Vir-
ginia, from which Place on the 28th of Decemb following Your
Petitioner was necessitated to return privately in a small
Vessel of his own to his Plantation in Maryland, in order to
take some Provisions for his Support in Virginia; It happened
that whilst your Petitioner was at his own house with his Wife
and Family, One Mr John Payne formerly a Comptroller under
King James having Notice that your Petr was returned from
Virginia did on the third of Ianuary 1689 with several armed
Men at an unseasonable time of Night come to seize your
Petitrs Vessel then riding at an Anchor in Patuxent River, but
the Persons who had Charge of your Petitioners Vessel
being unwilling to suffer the said Payne to come on board
with the force he brought with him they at the same time
