Coll Copley's letter touching a Comission
of Inquiry.

Saturday Decem 26.1691.
Sr
Mr Guilliam sente me worde this morning that Mr Attorney
can give no directions for the comision of inquirey without a
signed order of Councill a verball one not being sufficient:
I desire you will move my Lord President att Councill this
evening that an Order may be had and I desire Mr Aron
Smith their Majtys solicitor in these causes may pass the
comision it will cost a greate deale of money but is greatly to
their Majties service Mr Attorney must have the Areticles
preferd by the Cuntree against my Lord Baltemore that he
may see what Breaches to Assigne: and how to direct the
inquiry I desire you will order Capt Harris to bring you the
greate and small seale I will wait on you tomorrow in the
meane time I am
with respect

Order for Mr Paggen's Bills for £248 2s 6d to be delivered
to the Treasury.

At the Court at Whitehall 7th of Ianry 1691/2

Present
The King's most excellent Majesty in Councill.

Whereas Peter Paggen merchant trading to Maryland did
this day inform the Board that he had received Bills made
payable to him by order of the Convention of Maryland drawn
by severall Masters of ships in those parts, upon their Corres-
pondents in England, amounting to the sume of two hundred
and forty eight pounds two shillings and sixpence being in
discharge of so much of one moyety of the duty of two shil-
lings per hoggshead and of the Port duties payable in Mary-
land. It is this day ordered in Councill that the Right Honble
the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury do give directions
to the said Peter Paggen to deliver over the aforesaid Bills to
the Receiver Generall of their Majesty's Customes endorsed
by him as for their Majesty's service relating to the Govern-
ment of Maryland in order to be presented to the severall
