Sacrament in any orthodox Church or Chappell without being
in due Orders, whereof you are to give an account to the said
Bishop of London.
And to the end the Ecclesiasticall Iurisdiction of the said
Bishop of London may take place in that our Province as far
as conveniently may be We do think fit that you give all coun-
tenance and Encouragement in the exercise of the same except-
ing only the Colating to Benefices, Granting Licenses for
Marriage and Probate of Wills, which we have reserved to
You our Governor or the Commander in Chief for the time
being. You are to take care that a Table of Marriages estab-
lished by the Church of England be hung up in every Ortho-
dox Church and duly observed and to endeavour to get a Law
if the same be not already passed in the Assembly for the
strict observation of the said Table.
You are to take care that Drunkeness and Debauchery
swearing and blasphemy be severely punished and that none
be admitted to publick Trust and imployment whose ill Fame
and conversation may bring scandall thereupon. You shall
take care that all Planters and Christian Servants be well and
fitly provided with Arms and that they be listed under Officers
and when and as often as you shall think fit, mustered and
trained, whereby they may be in a better readiness for the
defence of Our said Colony and Dominion under your Gov-
ernment. You are to take especiall care that neither the fre-
quency nor unreasonableness of remote Marches, Musters,
and Trainings be an unnecessary Impediment to the affaires
of the Planters.
And for the greater security of that Our Province you are
to appoint fit Officers and Commanders in the severall Parts
of the Country boardering upon the Indians who upon any
invasion may raise Men and Armes to oppose them, untill
they shall receive your Directions therein. In Case of distress
of any Our Plantations you shall upon application of the
respective Governors to you, assist them with what aid the
condition and safety of your Government will permit.
You shall cause a survey to be taken of all the considerable
Landing Places and Harbours in Our said Province and with
the advice of our Councill erect in any of them such Fortifica-
tions as shall be necessary for the security and Advantage of
Our Province, which shall be done at the publick charge of
the Country not doubting of the chearfull concurrence of the
Inhabitants thereunto from the common security and benefit
they will receive thereby.
You shall take an Inventory of all Arms, Amunition and
Stores remaining in any of Our Magazines or Guarisons
in our said Province and send an Account of them yearly
