Memorandum of Smith's Case.
16th Decer 1689.
Richard Smith Junr of Calvert County in the Province of
Maryland being Capt of a company of Foote, and having
Order come from the honourable his Lopps Councill the then
Governor of this Province Imediately to raise his Company to
aid and assist in defence of the Government, peace and wel-
fare of this Province, for tht Capt John Coode, Major Cambell
and divers others were in Armes, intending to suppress the
Govermnt and the better to carry on their designs, caused a
false report to be spread abroard that the papists had com-
bined with the Northern Indians to destroy all Protestants,
which soe incensed the people before the said Smith could gett
his Company together had certain intelligence the state
