proceedings, & because they would shaddow themselves
under the protection of your Royal Majesty, they have pre-
tended all their outrages to be done, in and for your Majesty,
although there was never any one person appeared to act
against but with all willingness and thankfulness to God
Almighty have submitted to your Majties happy Reigne and
Government.
We your Majesties most humble and obedient Petitioners
(who are Protestants according to the Church of England) do
most humbly supplicate your Majesty (not presuming to be
directors in the same) that the Lord Baltemore may be restored
and sent back again unto this his former Government, under
whome we doubt not but we may live a quiet & contented
life, as we have done many years formerly, to the satisfaction
of the better part of the Province, and we hope to the good of
your Majesty, and your Petitioners as in duty bound shall ever
pray for your Majesties long life and happy Reign.

Whereas by King Charles the first of our ever blessed
Memory a Charter for the Province of Maryland was granted
unto Cecilius late Lord Baltemore containing divers Honble

due care and provision therein made for the preservation of
the Rights and Properties of the Inhabitants thereof as free-
born Subjects of the Kingdom of England, which wee your
Majesties ancient and most loyal Subjects Freeholders of the
County of Baltemore in the Province aforesaid can in no
measure say but that wee have freely and peacebly enjoyed
under the Government of the said Cecilius and the Lord Bal-

countenance whatsoever. Yet, nevertheless one John Coode
