ORIGIN & FUNCTIONS


DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS

In Charles County, the Department of Public Works formed in August 2010 from the merger of the Department of Public Facilities with the Department of Utilities.

CAPITAL SERVICES DIVISION
Under the Department of Planning and Growth Management the Capital Services Division originated, but transferred to the Department of Public Works in July 2016.

The Capital Services Division oversees the Department's Capital Improvement Projects.

FACILITIES DIVISION
Originally the Department of Public Facilities, the Facilities Division was made part of the Department of Public Works in August 2010.

The Facilities Division oversees four sections: Buildings and Trades; Environmental Resources; Parks and Grounds; and Roads.

UTILITIES DIVISION
The Utilities Division started as the Department of Public Utilities, and reformed as the Utilities Division within the Department of Public Works in August 2010.

The Division provides clean and safe drinking water and advanced treatment of wastewater for the County. The Division reads meters, and operates, maintains, and monitors all County water and sewer facilities. This includes wells, booster stations, storage tanks, pump stations, and wastewater treatment plants, as well as fire hydrants, water meters, manholes, sewer lines, and water connections.

Under the Utilities Division are four sections: Administration, Meters, Operations and Maintenance, and Technical Support.
