Payment of final estimate of Baker & Smith. longer time to finish* It has also been considered that nothing has heretofore been spent In Caroline County on the Preston route, whereas approximately $210.000 has been devoted to the Federals-burg-Denton-Greensboro Road, being the whole of the $170,000 available from the appropriations for 1908, 1909, 1910 and 1911, besides $40,000 anticipated from the appropriation for 1912 and 1913. This conclusion was reached after several trips over the ground by members of the Commission, and after a large public hearing at Denton. The motion was carried, Messrs. Miller and Ramsay noting "aye", and Mr. Goalin "nay". The Chairman desired to be recorded as being in favor of the motion* Inasmuch as the City of Baltimore is taking steps to spend one million dollars ($1,000,000) on the building of a new concrete bridge to connect the Annapolis Boulevard and Brooklyn with South Baltimore ; and owing to the fact that it will not be possible to spend the City's allotment of the State Road funds within the next two years, because of delays In securing rights of way on the other gaps or uncompleted links of the State System in the City ; and as it is highly advisable to secure a smooth and durable highway through the City from the north end of the proposed bridge ; 'and as there are legal difficulties in the way of the City giving any assistance in this Improvement ; It was, upon motion of Mr. Goslin, seconded by Mr. Miller, voted that a sum, not to exceed $180,000, be expended under the direction of the Chairman and the Chief Engineer in repavlng Hanover Street from Baltimore Street, south to said bridge, by the most practicable route, the material to be used being vitrified brick, or such other material as the Chief Engineer may agree upon with the City Authorities. Upon notion of Mr. Goelin, seconded by Mr. Ramsay, It was voted that the recommendation of the Chief Snglneer, contained in his letter of August 6, 1912, that the bid of Upshur D. Rich, for concrete construction on State Road #1, our Contract #06B, at Bladensburg, at $1.25 per square yard, and that Mr. Rich be allowed $286.41 for shipping and rigging oableway under his old contract, be, and the same is, hereby approved. Upon motion of Mr. Goal In, seconded by Mr. Miller, It waa voted that the final estimate of $7646.99, due Baker & Smith, contractors on their Contract #073, in Dorchester County, be paid. |
