Question of salary of Counsel to the Commission, Committee on applications for positions. Recommendations of Chief Engineer on working force of Engineering Dept. A meeting of the State Roads Commission was held this Monday, June 8th., 1908, at 11 o'clock A.M., in Room 512, Union Trust Building, Baltimore, Maryland. Present: Governor Austin L. Crothers, Chairman John Lr. Tucker, Dr. Ira Reinsen, Dr. Win. Bullock Clark, Mr. Samuel M. Shoemaker and Mr. Francis C. Hutton. The minutes of the last two meetings were read and approved. Dr. Clark moved that the Park Hall route of the St. Mary's County Road, as located by the Commission at the meeting held Llay 21, 1S08, "be changed to pass through St. Mary's City and St. Inigoes instead of through Trap. Mr Shoemaker seconded the notion, \vhich v/as adopted. Governor Crothers moved that after the Commission has located all the road in the State, an opportunity "be given the citizens of any section of the State to meet the Commission in Baltimore City to hear any suggestions they may have to make as to a revision of the location established by the Commission. The motion '.-/as seconded by Dr. Clark and adopted. Mr. Carville D. Benson, Counsel to the Commission, appeaed before the body and stated that he thought the salary of the Counsel should be at least $2000. per annum, instead of $1500. per annum, as fixed by the Com: iscion at the meeting held May 21, stating that he had devoted a large part of his time to the question of good roacls and was largely instrumental in bringing the Good Roads Law to a final passage at the last session of the General Assembly. Mr. Ben-son was excused by the Commission whilst they discussed the matter, the Commission finally deciding to let the salary stand as originally fixed, viz: $1500. per annum. nreraring Manks Governor Crothers moved that the matter of application for po- A \ sitions under the Commission be referred to a Committee consisting of the Chairman and Dr. Clark. The motion being duly seconded, was adopted. The Commission called upon Chief Engineer Crosby for recoiwnenda-tions as to the \vorking force of the engineering department, and Mr. Crosby sucpested that there should be a First Assistant Engineer and a Second Assistant Engineer, their salaries to be paid by the tv/o Commissions, viz: The State Road Commission and the Maryland Geological & Economic Survey Commission, to be determined upon in proportion to the amount of v/ork done by each Commission, the salaries to be divided arbitrarily, say three-fifths for the one and two-fifths for the other. Mr. Crosby also recommended the employment of two' stenographers in his department. In answer to a question by Governor Crothers, Mr. Crosby said the First Assistant Engineer gets (61
