No. 7-C - Fourth Regiment, Infantry* Maryland Volunteers Regimental Color Bearing the coat of arms of the United States with thirty-four stars above the head of the eagle, this blue regimental color was used by the Fourth Regiment, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers, through 1864. A red ribbon below the eagle carries the inscription, "Md. Vet. Vol. Infy." No. 8-A - Fifth Regiment, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers National Flag Presented to the Fifth Regiment, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers late in 1864 or early in 1865 by Governor Augustus W. Bradford on behalf of the State, this national flag bears thirty-five stars in five rows of seven each. The middle stripe bears the designation, "5th Regt. Md. V.I." No. 8-B - Fifth Regiment, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers National Flag This unusually designed national flag, with the State coat of arms in a circle of stars (the number indeterminable) in the blue canton, probably was presented to the Fifth Regiment, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers, upon its organization in September 1861. The two top red stripes carry battle credits for Antietam and Winchester, while on the middle stripe the designation, "5th Regt. Maryland Volunteers" is barely discernible. No. 8-C - Fifth Regiment, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers Regimental Color This regimental color—a companion to that labeled 8-A— was presented to the Fifth Regiment, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers, late in 1864 or early in 1865 by Governor Augustus W. Bradford on behalf of the State. It bears the coat of arms of the State on its obserse and that of the United States, with thirteen stars above the eagle, on its reverse. Of the battle credits listed under the State arms, only Antietam and Winchester are discernible. No. 8-D - Fifth Regiment, Infantry, Maryland Volunteers National Flag Only fragments remain of this national flag of the Fifth Regiment, Infantry. Probably it bore thirty-four stars and was used prior to the flag labeled 8-A. The Fifth Regiment, Infantry, was not a component of the Maryland Brigade. Following service in Virginia, it fought at Antietam and in the Valley of Virginia. It shared in the occupation of Richmond and saw service along the James River. — 13 —
