tion and Duties," be and it is hereby repealed and that new Section
37(x) be and it is hereby enacted in lieu thereof, to stand in the
place of the section repealed, and to read as follows:

37.

[(x) In Baltimore City, the Sheriff shall receive an annual sal-
ary of $16,000.00. He shall appoint an under-sheriff and chief deputy
at an annual salary of $11,000, one writ clerk and four assistant writ
clerks at an annual salary of $7,500, one stenographer and docket
clerk at an annual salary of $6,300, two clerks at an annual salary of
$4,500 and thirty-nine deputy sheriffs at annual salaries of $7,000
each. Each deputy shall receive a regular expense allotment of $50.00
per month. Any deputy sheriff who uses his personal automobile
shall be entitled to a monthly automobile allowance not to exceed
$50.00 per month. Said sum to be in addition to the regular monthly
expense allotment. Any Sheriff who is assigned a city-owned auto-
mobile shall not receive the monthly automobile expense allotment.
They shall also receive such assistants at such compensation as
shall be provided for in the annual ordinance of estimates of Balti-
more City. Provision shall also be made in said ordinance for the
expenses of the office of the Sheriff, including the purchase and main-
tenance of motor vehicles, and the mayor and city council shall have
the same power with respect to the salaries of the office of Sheriff as
it has under the city charter with respect to the salaries of all
municipal departments.

The mayor and city council shall pay monthly to the Sheriff of
Baltimore City one-twelfth of the amount provided in the ordinance
of estimates for the expenses of the Sheriff's office. Within thirty
days after December 31st in each and every year the Sheriff of
Baltimore City shall pay to the mayor and city council of Baltimore
any of the unexpended expense funds advanced during the year pre-
ceding said December 31st, and render a detailed account to the
mayor and city council of Baltimore of all expense funds received
and expended by him.]

(x) In Baltimore City, the Sheriff shall receive an annual salary
of $21,500
$20,000. , PROVIDED, HOWEVER, THAT IF THE
MAXIMUM ANNUAL SALARY RECEIVED BY THE CLERKS
OF EACH OF THE LAW AND CRIMINAL AND EQUITY
COURTS OF BALTIMORE CITY IS LESS THAN $20,000,
THE SHERIFF SHALL RECEIVE SAID MAXIMUM AMOUNT.
He shall appoint an under-sheriff and chief deputy-sheriff at
at annual salary of $14,500, two supervisory deputy sheriffs
at an annual salary of $9,250, one deputy sheriff writ cleric and four
assistant deputy sheriff writ clerks at an annual salary of $8,750, one
stenographer and docket clerk at an annual salary of $7,000, two
clerks at an annual salary of $5,000, and fifty-one deputy sheriffs at
annual salaries of $8,500 each. Any deputy sheriff who uses his per-
sonal automobile shall be entitled to a monthly automobile allowance
not to exceed $50.00 per month. Any Sheriff who is assigned a city-
owned automobile shall not receive the monthly automobile expense
allotment. They shall also receive such assistants at such compen-
sation as shall be provided for in the annual ordinance of estimates
of Baltimore City. Provision shall also be made in said ordinance
for the expenses of the office of the Sheriff, including the purchase
and maintenance of motor vehicles, and the mayor and city council
