CHAPTER 282
(House Bill 755)

AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 37(x)
of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1964 Replace-
ment Volume and 1966 Supplement) title "Sheriffs," subtitle
"Compensation and Duties," to provide for changes in the salaries
of the under-sheriff and chief deputy, assistant writ clerks, other
clerks, and deputy sheriffs in Baltimore City, and to change the
expense account of the sheriff of Baltimore City.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 37 (x) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of Maryland
(1964 Replacement Volume and 1966 Supplement) title "Sheriffs,"
subtitle "Compensation and Duties," be and it is hereby repealed
and re-enacted, with amendments, to read as follows:

37.

(x) In Baltimore City, the Sheriff shall receive an annual salary
of $16,000.00. He shall appoint an under-sheriff and chief deputy
at an annual salary of [$10,000] $11,000, one writ clerk and four
assistant writ clerks at an annual salary of [$7,000] $7,500, one
stenographer and docket clerk at an annual salary of [$5,500]
$6,300, two clerks at an annual salary of [$4,000] $4,500 and thirty-
nine deputy sheriffs at annual salaries of [$6,000] $7,000 each and
such assistants at such compensation as shall be provided for in
the annual ordinance of estimates of Baltimore City. Provision shall
also be made in said ordinance for the expenses of the office of the
Sheriff, including the purchase and maintenance of motor vehicles,
and the mayor and city council shall have the same power with
respect to the salaries of the office of Sheriff as it has under the city
charter with respect to the salaries of all municipal departments.

The mayor and city council shall pay monthly to the Sheriff of
Baltimore City [one twelfth of the amount provided in the ordi-
nance of estimates for the expenses of the Sheriff's office] $100
per month as expense funds.
Within thirty days after December
31st in each and every year the Sheriff of Baltimore City shall pay
to the mayor and city council of Baltimore any of the unexpended
expense funds advanced during the year preceding said December
31st, and render a detailed account to the mayor and city council of
Baltimore of all expense funds received and expended by him.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1967.
