            INDEX TO THE LAWS.

    Commitment authorised to enforce payment of certain
forfeitures,

    Of Punishment, when made as to slaves the valuation
to be paid by the treasurer of the western shore,
on an order by the governor,
    Provision for making a commutation of punishment
from the Baltimore roads to the penitentiary, on prayer
thereof in court,

    Of militia—each to consist of 64 privates, 4 sergeants,
4 corporals, 1 drummer, and 1 fifer or bugler,

    Of Anne-Arundel county—money to be levied for her
support,

    Authorised for building tobacco warehouses,

    The chief judge, or either of the associates, may
out of court direct judgments to be entered by confession,

    In the Penitentiary—criminals to be sentenced to,
—The court to decide and declare the time within
their respective periods prescribed, during which any
offender shall be confined,
—To direct, as to confinement in solitary cells,

    The governor and council empowered to compound
with former discoverers of British property confiscated,
or liable to confiscation, and to dispose of the same
within a limited time,
—After the time limited, to dispose of the states
right to any person,
—Extended to persons who had since that act, or
should make discoveries, within a limited time,
—Extended to any such property which might be
discovered to them, and 6 months allowed to compound,
    Purchasers of confiscated property under this act authorised
to prosecute suits for the recovery—the state
not liable for costs,
—The states right only to be sold—and that condition
to be made known,
—Deeds to be executed by the chancellor as for
other confiscated property,
    Provision for obtaining conveyances of land purchased,
the legal title to which is in a British subject or the
state,
    The chancellor empowered, on application of persons
claiming lands under deeds from the former commissioners
of confiscated property, and on proof of an
equitable title, to execute deeds in the name of the
state,
    All real property, which was liable to confiscation and
not sold, (except the reserves westward of Fort Cumberland,
and in Annapolis and Baltimore,) liable to be
taken up by warrant as vacant land,
—Where such land has been taken up by warrant
since the session of November 1785, the same to be valid,
&c.
—Not to affect the rights acquired by informers,

    Powers vested in the Congress of the United States
respecting the repair of post roads,
    The state divided into eight districts for electing nine
representatives in Congress,
