150 Journal of the State Council, 1784-1789.

Daffin, Robinson Stevens, Robert Griffin, Levin Kirkman, and John
Eccleston appointed Justices of the Peace for Dorchester County
and also to

John Dickinson, Edward Noel, James Shaw, Joseph Daffin and

Robinson Stevens appointed Justices of the Orphans Court of the

County aforesaid.

Mr. Joseph Clark having represented and it also appearing to this
Board that from the severity of the weather, the Workmen employed
on the public Buildings in this City, cannot perform the services
required of them, Mr. Clark is therefore ordered to discharge all the
Workmen employed on said Buildings except Anthony Jones, Hugh
Satchell, Michael Butler, Dennis Kerney, and Morris Roach, who
are under Contract to the State, and he is hereby empowered and
directed to sell and dispose of all the useless Lumber and Materials
in his Hands belonging to the Public for Cash, and to be Accountable
for the same.

The Council proceeded to the Choice of a Register in Chancery in
the room of William Hyde Esquire deceased, when the Votes ap-
peared as follows:

For Samuel Harvey Howard—Jeremiah Townley Chase and

James Hindman Esquires.
Burton Whitcraft—John Kilty Esqr.
Thomas Johnson junr.—John Davidson Esqr.

Whereupon Commission issued to Samuel Harvey Howard Es-
quire appointed Register in Chancery.

[p 183] Mr. Thomas Johnson junr. appointed Clerk of the
Council and Certificate of his Qualification produced and filed.

The Council adjourned 'till tomorrow morning 11 o'clock.

Wednesday 6th. December 1786

The Council met.

Present His Excellency William Smallwood Esquire.

The Hon'ble. Jeremiah Townley Chase

James Hindman

John Kilty

John Davidson Esquires.

Ordered That the Western Shore Treasurer pay to George Mur-
dock Esquire Three hundred and seventy five pounds to be delivered
over to Francis Deakins to be by him expended in defraying one half
of the Expence of examining, surveying, cutting, clearing, improving,
and keeping in repair a proposed Road from the Waters of Potow-
mack River to the River Cheat agreeably to a Resolve of the General
Assembly of November Session 1784 for which he is to Account.

That the said Treasurer pay to Messrs Carey and Tilghman Three
hundred and twenty two pounds, seventeen shillings and six pence
