Personal Life


Harry Sythe Cummings was born in Baltimore's Eleventh Ward in May 1866 to Henry and Eliza (nee Davage) Cummings. He was educated in Baltimore public schools and graduated from Lincoln University in Chester, Pa. in 1886. In 1889 he graduated from the University of Maryland law school, one of the first two black men to do so. [1]

In 1899 Cummings married Miss Blanche T. Conklin. Rev. Reuben H. Armstrong performed the honors at Madison Street Presbyterian Church on December 19. [2] The couple had two children: Harry S., Jr., and Louise Virginia. [3]

Cummings lived at 935 North Eutaw (-1891), 424 West Biddle Street (1891-99), 1234 Druid Hill Avenue (1899-1911), and 1318 Druid Hill Avenue (1911-1917). [4]

Harry Cummings died on September 7, 1917 at his home, 1318 Druid Hill Avenue, a week after he suffered a stroke and lapsed into unconsciousness. [5] His funeral on September 10 attracted many dignitaries and luminaries. [6]
