The Governor William Donald Schaefer Photographic and Memorabilia Collection (MSA SC 4383) consists of approximately 400 photographic albums containing personal and political photographs primarily covering the career of William Donald Schaefer while Mayor of Baltimore and Governor of Maryland, including political campaigns, ceremonies, state events, travel abroad, press clippings, and other memorabilia. Of particular note is box 118, which includes photographs of Governor Schaefer as a youth and while serving in the Army. The collection also includes plaques, certificates, and memorabilia given to William Donald Schaefer while Mayor of Baltimore and Governor of Maryland. These materials were transferred from the Govenor's Mansion and were made a gift to the Archives on October 4, 1994.

The Governor William Donald Schaefer Memorabilia Collection (MSA SC 4403) contains plaques, certificates, and other memorabilia given to William Donald Schaefer while Governor of Maryland. It includes certificates and plaques from the Women Legislators of the Maryland General Assembly, Maryland Stadium Authority, Maryland Worker's Compensation Educational Association, Santa Claus Anonymous, the United Way of Central Maryland, and other state agencies and organizations. These materials were initially held in the Governor's Office in Baltimore and in the State House and were transferred by JoAnne McQuade during the final year of the Schaefer administration.

The Governor William Donald Schaefer Artwork and Memorabilia Collection (MSA SC 4457) consists of paintings, artwork, plaques, and other memorabilia given to William Donald Schaefer while Governor of Maryland. These items were transferred from the State House and from Governor Schaefer's house.

During the summer of 1997, the collections were inventoried and labeled by Melody Haymire and Katherine Liapis, graduate students from the University of Maryland College Park and the University of Maryland Baltimore County respectively. An electronic database in MSAccess97 was created and used to generate collection inventories for the Archives website. In addition, preliminary biographical research was compiled by Rachel Kramer, an undergraduate student at the Johns Hopkins Unversity working on the Governor's Papers Project. The work done by Melody, Katherine, and Rachel provided a model for biographical and collection processing work done by the Archives' 1998 summer interns working on the Hughes Collection (MSA SC 4975).
