MSA SC 5496-050735
War of 1812 Claimant, Prince George's County, Maryland, 1828

Biography:

Nathaniel Hatton was born to Joseph Hatton Jr. and Martha Jones of Prince George's County. On February 15, 1816, Nathaniel Hatton married Ann Burch in Prince George's County.

During the War of 1812, Nathaniel Hatton's enslaved man Charles Jackson fled his property in Prince George's County. Hatton believed that Charles ran to the British vessels lying in the Potomac River near Alexandria. Charles was estimated to be worth $450. Hatton was the executor of his mother Martha Hatton's estate, and filed a claim in 1823 for one enslaved man that formerly belonged to her and for his negro man Charles. Negro Baptist, aged seventeen, had absconded from his mistress in southern Prince George's County on or about September 1, 1814. Baptist was commonly called John the baptist, but his given name was John Jackson. Basil Hatton, an uncle of Nathaniel Hatton, reported seeing Baptist and Charles on board a British schooner near Fort Washington.
