Biography:
William Griffen successfully escaped Cambridge, Maryland in Dorchester County at the age of 34. He fled to Canada with fellow slaves Levin Parker, Noah Ennells, James Camper, and Henry Moor. He was previously owned by James Waters, a lawyer and member of the Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge. Though little is known about his life after escape, Griffen did reach Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was aided there by individuals connected with the Underground Railroad.
