Seeing the poems
Have you ever seen a poem? I mean really looked at one, with your eyes
closed of course. Have you ever just listened to the words; let each image
roll into and out of your imagination like some small story pattering
its bare feet rapidly across your mind?
For the patrons and guests at the Library for the Blind and Physically
Handicapped (LBPH), they had just this experience. On Saturday, April
13th, Michael Collier, the poet Laureate of Maryland, gave a guest reading
at the LBPH.
His poems, which are image-rich, deeply personal and yet universal in
experience, entertained a large audience while he spoke of the act of
writing, his experiences while growing up, and the topics that fuel his
imagination.

Michael Collier reading.
With an introduction by library patron and pediatrician Dr. Connor, Michael
Collier was greeted with a warm reception and an excited audience. The
poet provided a varied reading, covering such themes as birds breeding
in May, going to the barber as a young boy, and the relationship of the
classic Odysseus to his dog Argos. In all of these, the constant reminder
of the relationship humans' share with nature, with their more primal
and instinctive selves was revealed.
The library also provided a varied collection of Mr. Collier's work in
Braille and in cassette both for sale and borrowing.

The reading was followed by a large reception with classical music by
a group made up of a violinist, flautist, and keyboardist.

Poems have always been a multi-sensory experience. They are written to
be read, to be heard, and to be felt in the metaphysical sense. For the
patrons of the LBPH, the poetry of Michael Collier did all of that.
