Deaf Way II

Gallaudet University is privileged to once again host Deaf Way II on July 8 - 13, 2002. The Organizing Committee has begun planning to ensure that this second international event will be as educational and enriching as the first --- and more! We are excited by unlimited possibilities in reaching out to an even larger audience both here and abroad, through use of the World Wide Web and other emerging Internet technologies.

The week of July 8-13, 2002, academic and community scholars will gather in Washington, D.C., USA, to present and discuss issues of language, history, culture, art, technology, and human rights. Artists will exhibit and perform arts shaped by the aesthetics and values of a shared culture. An experiential event, all participants become part of the celebration that will be a touchstone in deaf international history.

The universal reaction among The Deaf Way participants can be best summarized in one word, euphoric exclamations such as: "Wow," "Amazing," or "Wonderful." For nearly a week in July 1989, well over 5,000 deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing individuals from all over the world participated in The Deaf Way conference and festival. More than 600 scholarly presentations and artistic performances promoted international cross-cultural exchanges of language, culture, history, and art of deaf and hard of hearing people. The participants came out of the conference proud of their heritage and excited about the future. The Deaf Way sparked numerous positive changes for deaf and hard of hearing people worldwide.

CIRRIE Conference

Providing Culturally Competent Disability Services
to Persons Born in other Countries
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
Washington,D.C.
Wyndham City Center Hotel
May 6 - 8, 2002

CIRRIE is pleased to announce the first conference in the United States that focuses on disability services for persons who were born in another country. The conference will examine the impact of culture on attitudes toward disability and how this can affect communication between service providers and consumers. Best practices in cross-cultural rehabilitation will be presented and discussed. A pre-conference workshop on Culture Brokering will be held May 6.

Purpose: One of every 10 U.S. residents was born in another country. Many other nations also have high immigration rates. Increasingly, rehabilitation service providers are called upon to serve persons whose culture may differ from their own. Cultures often influence our understanding of disability and the goals and methods of rehabilitation. This conference will examine issues related to providing services to consumers born in other countries, and identify best practices.
Practitioners from the U.S. and other nations will describe the strategies they have developed to provide services to persons with disabilities who were born in another country. Other sessions will focus on specific cultures of the countries of origin, and concepts of disability and rehabilitation within those cultures. Special issues related to the different types of disability services will also be addressed. The two-day conference will include both invited and submitted papers. Culture Brokering, a full-day, optional pre-conference workshop, will be held May 6.

Who should attend?
Service providers, consumers, policymakers, advocates and scholars interested in cultural issues related to disability.

Registration:
On or before March 1, 2002: $190
After March 1: $260
