CIRRIE Conference

Providing Services for Foreign-Born Persons with Disabilities

Center for International Rehabilitation Research Information and Exchange
Save this date!
Providing Culturally Competent Disability Services
to Persons Born in other Countries
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

Washington,D.C.
Wyndham City Center Hotel
May 6 - 8, 2002
Sponsored by:
The Center for International Rehabilitation Research Information and Exchange (CIRRIE)
Co-Sponsors:

  • National Technical Assistance Center for Asians and Pacific Islanders with Disabilities, University of Hawaii at Manoa
  • Proyecto Vision: Training and Technical Assistance Center for Latinos with Disabilities, World Institute on Disability
  • The Consortium for Children and Youth with Disabilities and Special Health Care Needs
  • Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Independent Living Management
  • Institute for Community Inclusion/UCE Boston Children's Hospital and University of Massachusetts Boston

Purpose: One of every 10 U.S. residents was born in another country. Many other nations also have high immigration rates. Increasingly, rehabilitation service providers are called upon to meet the needs of persons whose culture may differ from their own. Cultures often influence our understanding of disability and the goals and methods of rehabilitation. This conference will examine issues related to providing services to foreign-born consumers, including problems and best practices.

Program: Rehabilitation practitioners from the U.S. and other countries will describe the strategies they have developed to provide rehabilitation services to foreign-born persons with disabilities. Other sessions will focus on specific cultures of the countries of origin. Special issues related to the different types of rehabilitation services will also be addressed. The two-day conference will include both invited and submitted papers. There will be a full-day, pre-conference workshop on Culture Brokering on May 6.

Who should attend?: Service providers, consumers, policymakers and scholars interested in cultural issues related to disability.

Registration fee:
$190 (postmarked on or before March 1, 2002)
$260 (postmarked after March 1, 2002)
