Maryland's Technology Assistance Guaranteed Loan Program Award
MARYLAND'S ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY GUARANTEED LOAN PROGRAM AWARDED $1.1 MILLION FROM U.S. AGENCY
MARYLAND CITIZENS WITH DISABILITIES TO BENEFIT
BALTIMORE, MD (October 15, 2001)
The Maryland Assistive Technology Guaranteed Loan Program, operated by the Maryland Technology Assistance Program (MD TAP) under the Governor's Office for Individuals with Disabilities, was recently awarded $1.1 million from the U.S. Department of Education/National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR). The grant more than doubles the size of the current program which provides low-interest loans to Maryland citizens with disabilities and their families to buy disability-related technology and has been in existence since December 1999.
"This program is a key element in Maryland's aggressive strategy to ensure all Marylanders have the tools they need to live productive lives," said Governor Parris N. Glendening. "State Assistive Technology Programs open the doors of opportunity by helping people get jobs and businesses, attend college, find reliable transportation, communicate with family and friends and enjoy safe access to their homes and communities."
"State Assistive Technology Programs help persons with disabilities gain employment by providing them with the devices and services they need to participate in the workforce," stated Congressman Steny Hoyer. " In short, it allows them to become self-sufficient, contributing members of our society. I have been fighting for increased funding for this program for the past few years and I am very excited to see it improving the lives of individuals with disabilities in Maryland."
Since its inception, the Assistive Technology Guaranteed Loan Program has approved 105 loan guarantees totaling over $1,000,000 in principal for technology including adapted vehicles and computers, Braille equipment, wheelchairs, scooters, ramps and other home renovations and telecommunications devices for the deaf. Loans may also be used to pay for training on equipment, insurance, extended warranties and maintenance plans. Three participating lenders have been recruited, including the State Employees Credit Union, SunTrust Bank and 1st Mariner Bank. The program has subsidized interest rates to four points below the prime rate for each guaranteed loan and facilitated eight loans without guarantees, at no cost to the program, totaling over $63,000. For more information on the Assistive Technology Guaranteed Loan Program contact MD TAP at (410) 554-9230 or 1-800-832-4827.
