PURPOSE OF THE CONFERENCE

The conference serves as a leading forum for a wide variety of professional presentations and discussion about new assistive technology, practical applications, and services. There will be presentations, demonstrations and exhibits in the following program areas: Augmentative and Alternative Communication, Blindness, Computer Access, Electronic Aids to Daily Living, Learning Disabilities, Low Vision, and other Assistive Technology. In addition, computer and technology exploration labs will provide an opportunity to further experiment with and evaluate the latest assistive technology.

This conference offers a variety of exhibits as well as sessions conducted by manufacturers, professionals, and consumers. It offers extensive product information and training sessions about the newest AT products. Persons at the conference will be able to attend:

Sibshops: Workshops for Siblings of disabled children.


  • A program just for brothers and sisters of kids with special needs!
  • Sibshops are for kids, ages 8-13, who have a brother or sister with special health or developmental needs.
  • Sibshops are a celebration of the many contributions made by brothers and sisters.
  • At Sibshops you get to meet other brothers and sisters of kids with special needs.
  • Sibshops have some of the friendliest kids in the world and it's a safe place to be!
  • Sibshops have outrageous games and great cooking activities.
  • At Sibshops you can talk about the good and not-so-good parts of having a brother or sister who has special needs.

Purpose of Conference . . .
The goal of the conference is to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disabilities through the appropriate selection and use of assistive technology. Anyone with an interest in assistive technology devices and services is welcome. Breakout sessions will focus on funding issues and legislation, education, employment, hands-on assistive technology training and the design and development of low tech adaptive devices.

Power Up 2002.

Power Up 2002, the Missouri Assistive Technology Advisory Council Conference and Exposition, will be held on Monday and Tuesday, April 15 & 16, 2002 at the Holiday Inn Select in Columbia, MO. Through a variety of venues, Power Up 2002 will provide information which impacts on the provision of cutting edge assistive technology. This will be a place for sharing information, experiences and insights, meeting new people with similar interests and for looking toward a future of increased independence and access for Missourians with disabilities.

Power Up, the Missouri Assistive Technology Exposition and Conference, has a mission of strengthening the capacity of consumers and providers in assuring the provision of assistive technology. Power Up features a variety of general and concurrent sessions which provide people with disabilities, educators, and service providers up-to-date information on disability related policy, assistive technology services and devices, educational policy and practices, etc. to enhance and promote independence of people with disabilities. Power Up also provides a large exposition of assistive technology devices, including product demonstrations.

Roger Crawford inspires, empowers and entertains audiences throughout the world. Many have even called him an energizer, because of his ability to activate and invigorate those who hear him. Although physically challenged, he is certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association and became the first athlete with a severe handicap to compete in a NCAA Division I college sport.

Whether she is presenting a motivational speech or headlining a comedy club, Juli Burney is a well seasoned performer! An Assistant Professor in Communication and Theatre at Doane College in Lincoln, Nebraska, she has five times been named "Teacher of the Year." Juli is a hit with all ages, as she relates to each individual the humor of life and communication.
