by Mollyne Honor-Forte, LBPH LibrarianMaryland State Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped Holds Its First Technology Seminar
On Saturday April 10th. MD LBPH held its first technology seminar. The program was aimed at providing blind and visually impaired individuals with an opportunity to see what is possible with a computer and to understand that computers and the Internet can be accessible with the right hardware and software. Sixty four people received a demonstration by librarian Mollyne Honor-Forte of JAWS (speech synthesizer) and Zoomtext Plus (screen enlarger and speech synthesizer), two of the software packages on the library's accessible workstation. The library also had on display a personal reading machine, a scanner-reader, a braille translation software and a brailler.
Judy Dixon of the National Library Service, talked about access to the Internet for a blind or visually impaired person and gave a demonstration of several screen reader- speech synthesizers and access to the Internet. She also entertained numerous questions regarding the basics to buying a computer and defined some basic computer terms.
Refreshments were served courtesy of the library's Friends group.
Because of the overwhelming success of this program, the library will offer a second program on Saturday November 13th and another program at its subregional library in Montgomery County at a date to be determined.
