Computer Curriculum Sought

Computer Curriculum Sought

Happy St. Patty's Day to All!

One of our school districts in Maryland would like to know if any one is aware of a "computer curiculum for transistioning-age students with developmental disabilities." They would like to add training in basic computer skills to their employment-readiness activities. They are also interested in hearing of the kinds of job placements that may be available for such students (example using bar code readers to track packages, complete inventories, etc.)

For those of you who want Special Ed info, you may want to sign up for the listserv of the Special-Ed-Advocate by sending an e-mail to majordomo@wrightslaw.com and writing "subscribe special-ed-advocate" in the Message area (without the quotation marks). A Call from Down Under for AT Ideas

As a developer and manufacturer of technology I have enjoyed being part of this list for quite a while now, and would like to offer a challenge to everyone on the list. Perhaps this should be a challenge for AER in general.

I'd like to know if it is possible to define a list of what products and technologies, you as practitioners in the field want. Yes, a wish list!

And while in a brainstorming mode, are there general directions or "way out" ideas people have about what is needed.

The 3 possible classes that these ideas may fall in are;

1. Day to day items, possibly called "low-tech" items that are not there now but are needed.

2. Electronic or computer based products

3. The "what if" products that seem more like science fantasy than something that will ever become real.

If it is possible to develop such a list it would serve many purposes, not least of which is to provide direction and meaning to the millions of dollars that is being spent on research and development projects for technology for vision impairment around the world.

Any ideas?

Cosmic Videophone

D.

COSMIC VIDEO, INC. is pleased to announce the introduction of the COSMIC Videophone to the United States. This COSMIC Videophone has recently sold 20,000 units to the Deaf Association of Norway. The picture speed (25 to 30 frames per second) and the picture quality easily allow for effective communication by Sign. A recent demonstration of the COSMIC Videophone at the West Virginia School for the Deaf generated this remark. "With TTY, no one can see how I feel. Now people can see how I feel". During this demonstration many students had the opportunity to communicate utilizing the COSMIC Videophone. All students, including some that were mentally challenged, were able to communicate very effectively.

The COSMIC Videophone can be used with either a standard television set (with A/V jacks) or a computer monitor. The system requires only one ISDN telephone line and is not subject to the inconsistency of the Public Internet. The COSMIC Videophone is more readily installed than a VCR unit. All necessary connecting cables are included with the base unit. This lightweight unit weighs contains an integral camera, which can be swiveled and focused for maximum flexibility. The COSMIC Videophone is priced at $2,195, thousands less than its competition, which makes it ideal for the home and/or small office.

The COSMIC Videophone is controlled by a very simple menu system. The menu system is driven from the standard telephone keypad. The menus are easily navigated using the "#" key for menu entry and the "8" key to exit. The menus command the picture in picture features; video input selection, picture transmission quality and speed among other features.

The COSMIC Videophone base unit allows for two additional video inputs (such as a document display unit, VCR, remote camera, computer screen and more).

The COSMIC Videophone can be used to enable face to face meetings with family and friends who may be living in other cities. Grandparents can share the first steps of the grandchildren, as they happen. Business people can see their families while out of town. Students, living away from home, can share their experiences with a simple COSMIC Videophone call. The COSMIC Videophone truly allows us to say "How nice to see you" or "Let me show you something".

Business organizations can use the COSMIC Videophone to reduce travel costs and time. For example, the insurance industry can use the COSMIC Videophone to review, by telephone, an automobile accident claim in real time with the repair facility, including video.

The COSMIC Videophone also has significant applications in the Security industry. Integration of motion sensitive cameras can place a call to a remote security-monitoring facility, reducing the need for on-site personnel. Video and audio communication is possible directly with the intruders, if desired. The camera operates in real-time, eliminating the troublesome "painting" feature of most security systems.

There are many other uses for the COSMIC Videophone. We limit ourselves only by our imagination. Please review the attached information and e-mail us your questions and/or comments. Please visit us at www.cosmicvideo.com.
