    • 1 April - Senate Joint Resolution 16 requesting the Governor to provide for the use of the Old House of Delegates Chamber by the Department of Legislative Reference, and to make any alterations or changes which may be necessary for this purpose.  Resolution read and referred to the Committee on Finance.  (1199)
    • 3 April - Resolution 16 passed and sent to the House of Delegates.  (1409)
    • 5 April - House amends Resolution 16 and returns it to the Senate.  (1612-1613)
  • July-September 1937 - Correspondence regarding repairs and replacement of the lightning rods on the roof of the State House.  Board of Public Works (General File) (MSA S 42-201, 16,376-120)
    • 21 July - Letter from National Lightning Rod Co. to Elmer Hammond re: recommendations for lightning rod situation.
    • 26 July - Estimates for lightning rods
    • 17 August - Board of Public Works decides to remove the lightning rod system from the State House because it is not in working order.
    • 25 August - Letter from E. Lee Kries to U.S. Bureau of Standards re: lightning rods and roof construction at the State House.

  • Proceedings of the House of Delegates, 1939 Session.
    • 19 January - Ordered that the Superintendent of Public Buildings be requested to install in the corridors of the State House, electric bells to be used for informing the members of the legislature that the General Assembly is about to convene.  (97) 
    • 24 January - Resolved that the Chief Engineer of the State House be authorized to install a loud-speaker system in the House Chamber; one microphone on the Speaker's stand and one microphone on the Reading Clerk's desk.  Cost not to exceed $500.  (125) 
    • 6 February - Resolution relative to the installation of a sound amplifying system in the House Chamber, read and referred to the Committee on Rules.  (244-245) 
    • 23 February - Speaker authorized and directed to purchase the Loud Speaker System equipment now in use in the House of Delegates Chamber, the cost thereof not to exceed $500.00.  (442) 
    • 23 March - House resolution requesting the Governor to include in the Supplemental Budget funds for decorating, painting and improving the Old Senate and House of Delegates Chambers and the State House generally, is sent to the Governor.  (1312-1313) 
    • 29 March - House resolution 30 requesting the Governor to provide in his budget for certain lounge rooms in the State House, passed and sent to the Senate.  (1634-1635) 
    • 3 April - House bill 794 authorizing a committee of 3 to contract for and cause to be installed in the House Chamber, an electrical voting or roll call system of the latest design and construction, at a cost not exceeding $36,000.000, passed and sent to the Senate.  (2246-2247)  Also, motion to reconsider the vote of House bill 794 is rejected.  (2258)  Also, Senate returns House Joint Resolution 30.  (2422) 
  • Proceedings of the Senate, 1939 Session.

  • 7 March 1940 - Proposal from Bernard Appel Inc. to repair slate roof, metal work and skylights in House and Senate Chambers, and to point stone on State Circle pavement.  (MSA S 42-120)
  • March 1940-January 1941- Governor Herbert O'Conor's plan to restore the Old Senate Chamber and various portraits hung in the State House.  Articles document changes made during restoration of the House and Senate Chambers to their original configurations.   (MSA S 1259-131-1362)  File includes:

    • 26 May - House amends, passes and returns Senate Bill 8 entitled, "Authorize the creation of a state debt in the aggregate of $525,000, the proceeds of which to be used for constructing and furnishing committee rooms, etc., and a tunnel connecting the State House and Court of Appeals Building.  (229-231)
  • July-September 1948 - Contracts for furnishing and installing new elevators in the State House and Court of Appeals Building.  (MSA S 36-3, 50,019-23-1, 50,019-23-2, 50,019-23-4)
    • 14 July -  General Elevator Company, Inc. for furnishing and installing an elevator in the State House.
    • 15 September  - Otis Elevator Co. for removing 2 existing elevators in the State House and Court of Appeals and replacing them therefore.
    • 19 September - Change Order 14 for Joh McShain for constructing a concrete platform in the elevator machine room over the old elevator, and removing brick wall in Anne Arundel County Room and installing two 10 inch I beams.
  • August-November 1948 - Contracts with Consolidated Gas, Electric, Light & Power Company for electrical work in the State House.  (MSA S 36-3, 50,019-23-3, 50,019-23-4)
    • 30 August-10 October  - For fixtures for the Senate Lounge and other rooms of the State House. 
    • 17 November - Change Order 1 ffor furnishing electric signs.
    • December - Correspondance between Board of Public Works and Department of Public Improvement re: copy of change order Number 2 to contract with Consolidated Gas, Electric Light and Power for delivering lamps for fixtures for the old portion of the State House.  (MSA S 42-128, 16,376-47)
  • November 1948-January 1949 - Change Orders between the Board of Public Works and John McShain re: State House renovations.  (MSA S 36-3, 50,019-23-, 50,019-23-6)
    • 15 November - Change Order 15 for refinishing all windows stained and damaged by wear and tear.
    • 3 December - Change Order 16 for painting,lavatory, marble and plaster work in Committee Rooms, House and Senate Chambers and the Lobby.
    • 23 December - Change Order 18 for installing numbers on all doors and erecting brass signs.
    • January 1949 - Change Order 3-B for painting walls in Old State House and unstalling 38 lights of cathedral glass in House and Senate skylights.
  • December 1948 - Contracts with John McShain for work on State House roof.  (MSA S 36-3, 50,019-23-5)
    • 8 December - For sheet metal and roof repairs.
    • 14 December - Change Order 17 for cutting leaded glass skylights for reception of Rambush lights over House and Senate Chambers, repairing skylights, painting and reflooring President's Office.
