William Harwood (1809-1900)

Biography:

Born December 24, 1809.  Son of Richard Harwood and Sarah (Callahan) Harwood.  Attended St. John's College, Annapolis, graduated 1827.  Studied law.  Admitted to the Maryland bar, c. 1829.  Married Hester Anne Loockerman (1807-1890), granddaughter of Jeremiah Townley Chase, November 25, 1834.  Children:  Frances Chase (c. 1838-1910), Louisa Chase (d. 1896), Lucy (c. 1844-1905), Richard Loockerman (1846-1863), Hester Anne (1851-1924).  Resided in the Hammond-Harwood House, Annapolis.

Engaged in the private practice of law.  State librarian.  Mayor of Annapolis, 1859-1860.  Professor of English and Ethics, United States Naval Academy, 1860-61.  School examiner of Anne Arundel County, c. 1865-.  Member and secretary of the board of visitors and governors, St. John's College.  Member, St. Anne's Protestant Episcopal Church.
