Biography:
Born Mildred Catharine Bowers, December 31, 1899, in Hagerstown, Maryland. Daughter of Martin H. and Catharine S. (Mundey) Bowers. Attended Hagerstown public schools and the Maryland State Teachers College at Towson (now Towson University). Married (1) Charles W. Huyett (2) John B. Huyett. Two children with Charles W. Huyett: Elizabeth Huyett and Charles Brinham Huyett. Died March 27, 1979, in Hagerstown, Maryland. Buried at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, Maryland.
House of Delegates, Washington County, 1964-67. Democrat. Appointed December 31, 1964, to complete the term of husand, John B. Huyett, who died September 26, 1964. She was the first woman to serve in the House of Delegates from Washington County. She served on the Motor Vehicles Committee and the Veterans, Militia, and State Police Committee. During the 1966 session, she introduced House Bill 805, which prohibited discrimination based on sex in municipal elections and public office holding. It became law on June 1, 1966. She also introduced House Resolution 2, which requested "that the State Department of Forests and Parks label certain trees within the parks in order to allow for easier study of trees." On September 14, 1966, she lost the Democratic primary to retain her seat in the House of Delegates.
Co-owner of Huyett's Bakery and a former teacher. Superintendant of Household Department of Hagerstown Fair Association. Member, Washington County Democratic Women's Organization; Clear Spring Fire Department Auxiliary; Dry Run Homemakers Club; St. John's Lutheran Church; Virginia Benner Sunday School class.
