TWELFTH GENERATION

3868. Henry Adams was born about 1583 in Barton St. David, Somerset, England. He died on Oct 6 1646 in Braintree, Massachusetts. Henry Adams was the first member of what would become one of America's most famous families to arrive in this country. There has been a great deal of speculation regarding his ancestry, but his origins among the yeomanry of Somerset now seems beyond dispute.

The earliest record of him appears in his father's will of 1604, at which time he must have been of age. He appears to have lived in Barton St. David until 1622 when he moved to Kingweston, a neighboring village. He emigrated to Massachusetts in 1638 and was given forty acres at Mount Wollaston by the town of Boston on February 24th, 1639/40, upon payment of three shillings per acre. In England he had been a farmer and maltser and carried on those professions in America.

His one surviving signature is in the "Italian hand," which would indicate a decent, if local, education.

At his death he left an estate valued at 75 pounds, 13 shillings.
