1620. Major Thomas Brooke
(210)
(20) was born on Jun 23 1632 in Battel, Hampshire, England. He died
in 1676 in Brookfield Manor, Calvert County, Maryland. Major Thomas Brooke
immigrated to Maryland in 1650 with his father and step-mother. He was commissioned
a captain commanding the Calvert County militia on Jun 15 1658, and a major on
Feb 11 1660. His brother, Baker Brooke, in his will, refers to him as Colonel
Thomas Brooke, but no commission or record of him holding such a rank survives.
He represented Calvert County in the Provincial Assembly from 1663 to 1666, and
was High Sheriff of the county in 1666-1667. He was Presiding Justice of the
county from 1667 until his death in 1676.
Thomas Brooke was a major landowner in Calvert and Prince George's Counties.
At one of his plantations, Brookfield, he carved his initials on a boundary stone.
This is the origin of the otherwise very curious name of a small Maryland town
just south of Andrew's Air Force Base outside of Washington, TB. At his death,
his personal estate was appraised at 95,910 pounds of tobacco and contained ten
slaves and ten indentured servants. He held 7,742 acres of land.
Born and raised a Protestant, he converted to Roman Catholicism and three of
his sons became Jesuit priests.
He was married to Eleanor Hatton in 1659 in Maryland.
