Biography:

BALLARD, CHARLES (ca. 1670-ca. 1724/25).
BORN: Ca. 1670 in Somerset County; younger son.
NATIVE: second generation.
RESIDED: in Manokin Hundred, Somerset County.
FAMILY BACK­GROUND.
FATHER: Charles Ballard (?— 1682), who immigrated in 1665, was both literate and a mer­chant, and who served as a justice of Somerset County from 1670 to 1676 and from 1676 to 1682.
MOTHER: Sarah, widow of both John Elzey and Thomas Jordan, whose fourth husband was Stephen Luffe (?—1693).
BROTHERS: Henry (1666— 1697); Jarvis (?—l765). SISTERS: Sarah (1668—?), who married Randall Revell, son of Randall Revell (ca. 1611—1686/87); Elizabeth, who married first, John King, second, Thomas Wilson, and third, Peter Dent (ca. 1665—1710/11).
MARRIED Eleanor, daughter of Robert King (?—l697). Her brother was Robert King (1689—1755). Her sister was Mary (1674—1744), who married first, Francis Jenkins (ca. 1650-17 10), second, Rev. John Henry (?—l7 17), and third, Rev. John Hampton (?— 1720/21).
CHILDREN.
SONS: Henry; Charles.
DAUGHTERS: Sarah; Anna; Isabella; Alice; and Elizabeth.
PRIVATE CAREER.
EDUCATION: literate.
RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION: Protestant, probably a Presbyterian.
SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES:  Gent., by 1694.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: planter.
PUBLIC CAREER. LEGISLATIVE SERVICE: Lower House, Somerset County, 1715.
LOCAL OFFICES:
justice, Somerset County, 1699—1724/25; coroner, Somerset County, 1705, 1711—1713.
MILITARY SERVICE: captain, 1701; major, by 1722/23.
WEALTH DURING LIFETIME. LAND AT FIRST ELECTION; Ca. 1,200 acres.
WEALTH AT DEATH.
DIED: between November 1724 and January 21, 1724/25.
PERSONAL PROPERTY: TEV, £683.lO.2 (including 17 slaves and books).
LAND; over 600 acres.
