State of Maryland Caroline County to wit Whereas application hath been made to me by a negro man named Stansbury Carmon for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of assembly in such case made and provided by which said acts free negroes and Mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a Certificate of being free born And whereas also upon the oath of Alexander P Jorden of Caroline County aforesaid that the said negro man named Stansbury Carmon for whom this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that from his own account he is now about twenty two years of age five feet nine and three quarter inches high or thereabouts of a Chesnutt Complexion was born in Sussex County Del and partly raised in Caroline County Maryland and has a small scar of a cut above the right eye and small scars on his upper lip and has notable marks or scars that I have observed In Testimony whereof I hereunto subscribe my name and affix the seal of Caroline County Court this 20th day of November Anno Domini 1851 James H.
