Caroline County Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1806-1827

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas application hath been made to me
by a coloured man named John Jolly for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the Act
of Assembly in such case made and provided by which said Act free negroes and
Molattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a Certificate
of being free born, And whereas also upon the Oath of Abraham Griffith of Caroline County
that the said negro man named John Jolly for whom this Certificate is made was
free born I do therefore grant his said Application and hereby Certify that he is
twenty three years of age or thereabouts the first of October last he is about five feet
four inches and a half high of a dark brown Complexion was born and raised in
Caroline county and has a scar on each of his knees & no other scar or mark
that I have observed
                      In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the
(Seal)             Public seal of my office this 29th day of November Anno Domini

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit;  Whereas on the Thirty first day of
March in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and Nineteen
William Chillton of Caroline County by deed of Manumission duly executed
acknowledged and recorded amongst the Land records of Caroline county did
manumit and set free a certain Molatto woman named Maria to be
free from the date of the said Manumission and the said molatto woman
named Maria having made application to me for a Certificate of her
freedom agreeably to the Act of Assembly in such case made and provided
and whereas also upon the Oath of Caroline Fountain of Caroline county
that the said molatto woman named Maria for whom this Certificate
is made is the same person mentioned in the said manumission
I do therefore grant her said application and hereby Certify that the said
molatto woman named Maria according to her age expressed in the
said manumission will be Twenty nine years of age the thirty first day
of March Eighteen hundred and Twenty three she is about four feet ten
and three quarter inches High of a bright molatto complexion was born &
raised in Caroline County & has no notable scar or mark that I have observed
          In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
(seal)  seal of my Office this 12th day of December Anno Domini 1822
