Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas heretofore to wit; On the twenty third
day of March Eighteen hundred and      twenty nine a certain Mitchell Surggett
Martin Surggett & Samuel Surggett of Caroline County by deed of manumission duly
executed acknowledged and recorded among the Land records of Caroline County did
manumit and set free a certain negro man named Isaac Trought to be free from and
after the twenty third day of March Eighteen hundred and twenty nine and the said
negro man named Isaac Trought having made application to me for a certificate of his
freedom agreeably to the act of Assembly in such case made and provided and whereas
also upon the oath of Martin Surggett of Caroline County that the said negro man
named Isaac Tought for whom this certificate is made is the same person mentioned
in the said manumission I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify
that from his own account he was thirty seven years of age the fourth day of
September last past five feet and six inches hight or thereabouts of a Brown complexion
was born and raised in Caroline County has a scar on his right arm occasioned
by the cut of whip one other large scar on his right knee caused by the gore of a
Bull one other scar just above the cap of the right knee one other large scar on the
inside of his left knee joint and one other large scar on his left foot extending
across the toes and has no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of
           my office this 4th day of August anno Domini 1835

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made to me by a
negro man named Ennalls Pennington for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly
in such case made and provided; by which said act free negroes and mullattoes are permitted to travel
out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born; And whereas also upon the
oath of Jesse D. Hicks of the County aforesaid that the said negro above named for whom
this certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify
that from his own account he is now in his twenty third year of age fife feet eight and a
half inches high or thereabouts of a black complexion was born and raised in Caroline County
aforesaid and has a scar of a burn on the back of his left hand and a large scar of a cut on his
outside right ancle and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of my
           Office this 20th day of August anno Domini 1835
