Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

County that the said negro man named Noah Adams for whom this certificate is made
was free born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that from his own account
he is about thirty five years ^of age^ six feet and one quarter of an inch high or thereabouts of a
Black complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has a scar on his right
cheek caused as he says by the tooth ache and another small scar of a burn on his chin below
the right corner of his mouth and a long scar of a scratch over his left eye brown extending
obliquely to the left cross wise his forehead and a knot on the first Joint of his right
forefinger and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal
           of my office this 21st day of April Anno Domini 1832

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made to
me by a negro man named William Adams for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to
the act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and mulattoes
are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free
born and Whereas also upon the oath of William Andrew of Caroline County that the said
negro man named William Adams for whom this certificate is made was free born
I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that from his own account he was
twenty two years of age last christmas five feet and a quarter inches high or thereabouts
of a black complexion was born and raised in Caroline County and has a scar of a cut
on the inside of the end of the finger next the little finger of his left hand and a scar of a
burn on his breast and another large scar of a cut on the out side of his left leg and no other
notable ma^r^ks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of
           my office this 21st day of April Anno Domini 1832
