49 State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas heretofore to wit on the twenty fifth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety nine a certain John Hooper of Caroline County aforesaid by Deed of Manumission duly executed and recorded did manumit and set free a certain negro boy called Kitt (at that time one year old) to be free and at liberty from the date of the said manumission And whereas the same negro boy named Kitt (now calling himself himself Christopher Gardiner) has made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided and I being satisfied by the oath of Benjamin Roe of the County aforesaid that the said negro boy named Kitt (now calling himself Christopher Gardiner) for whom this certificate is made is the identical negro boy mentioned in the said Manumission I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that the said negro boy Kitt (now calling himself Christopher Gardiner) is five feet six inches high or thereabouts from his age at the date of and by the said manumission expressed he was twenty years of age in April last of a black complexion his hair woolly was born and raised in Caroline County has a small scar on the top of his right foot between the big toe joint and the instep and no other notable marks that I have observed (seal) In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my name and the public seal of my office affixed this 10th day of July Anno Domini 1818 Jo Richardson Clerk of Caroline County Court Caroline County to wit; I hereby certify that the within and aforegoing copy of a certificate of freedom is truly and faithfully taken and copied from the original certificate which was this day produced and delivered to me in a torn defaced & mutilated state by the said negro man Kitt (now calling himself Christopher Gardiner) named in the said certificate And I further certify that the said negro man Kitt (now calling himself Christopher Gardiner) has a scar on the left side of his under lip and another scar on the under part of his left hand occasioned as he says by the cut of a reap hook and another scar on the upper part of his right hand which scars he alleges he received since the original certificate of his freedom was granted In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the (seal) public seal of my office this 23d day of May Anno Domini 1831 Jo Richardson Clk of Caroline County Court |
