Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:      Whereas application hath been
made to me by a coloured man named Idolet Collins for a certificate of his freedom
agreeably to the acts of Assembly in such cases made and provided by which said acts
free negroes and mulattoes are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention
of a certificate of being free born; and Whereas upon the oath of Richard Loockerman
of Caroline County aforesaid that the said coloured man named Idolet Collins for
whom this certificate is made was free born; I do therefore grant his said application
and hereby certify that from his own account he was twenty one years of age
on the twenty ninth day of February last is five feet seven and a quarter inches
high or thereabout was born and raised in Caroline County aforesaid is of a dark
mulatto or brown complexion has a long scar extending from the hand joint of his
right thumb above the wrist joint and two other scars one below the inward left ancle
and the other on the inward side & bottom of his left foot and no other notable marks
or scars that I have observed
(seal)            In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
                    seal of my office this 21st day of September Anno Domini 1844

man named Moses Smith jun.r for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the acts of
Assembly in such Cases made and provided by which said acts free negroes and mulattoes are
permitted to travel out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate of being free
born; And Whereas also upon the oath of James Turner of Caroline County aforesaid that
the said negro man named Moses Smith jun.r for whom this Certificate is made
was free born; I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that from
his own account he is now about twenty nine years of age five feet six and one half
inches high or thereabouts was born ^in Talbot^ and raised in Caroline County Complexion
black and has a small scar of a cut on the right thumb near the end and a small
black natural mark on the back of his left hand and has no other notable marks
or scars that I have observed   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my
(seal)            name and affix the public seal of my office this twenty sixth
                    day of September Anno Domini 1844
